Some poor people took six of Juan's early pots and traded them for used clothing in a small second-hand shop across the northern border. Some months later, a U.S. anthropologist, Spencer MacCallum, entered the shop and was captivated by the anonymous, unsigned pots. He wanted to find the maker, who he thought must have been a woman. The owner of the store didn't know where the poor people had come from, but thought probably Mexico.
