Arequipa...La Ciudad Blanca or The White City
Arequipa is the hidden gem of Peru. Its buildings are constructed with the unique white volcanic rock, sillar, found only in Arequipa, thus giving it the nickname of "The White City." It is located at 7,661 ft (2,335 m) and is surrounded by three volcanoes which provide glorious vistas from almost any perspective. Arequipa's City Center has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its quaint colonial ambience along with its many scenic and cultural sites, make the city a Must-See destination when visiting the land of the Incas. <<< Look through the first arch to see one of the towers of Arequipa's lovely Cathedral. |
Just a short 2-1/2 hours from Arequipa lies Chivay. At an elevation of 12,000', it is upstream of the famous Colca Canyon. The Colca Canyon is home to the Peruvian condors. You'll wake early in the morning to drive up to Condors' Cross and witness the birds, some of them with wingspans over 6' wide as they rise on their ascent from the bottom of the canyon as the morning sun creates rising air currents. The Canyon is one of the deepest in the world and the surrounding Incan terraces are maintained today in much the same way as their ancestors created them centuries ago. |
You may choose to work on a special project with an indigenous community, just visit and dance with the locals like Maria's doing here or travel in luxury all the way. The choice is yours. |
The quaintness of Arequipa will absolutely get under your skin! You'll want to extend your time to stay longer. |
